Harry Potter Spells

There are many spells in Harry Potter that use Latin. These are some of them:

Accio:  “I summon”

Avis:  “Bird”
Oppugno avis:  “I, a bird, attack”
An example of when this spell is used is when Hermione has birds attack Ron after she sees him kiss Lavender.

Cave inimicum:  “Beware of the enemy”

Confringo:  “I break into pieces, I ruin”

Confundo:  “I mix up, jumble, confuse”

Crucio:  “I torture”

Defodio:  “I dig, bury”

Deprimo:  “I press down, push down, sink”
An example of when this spell is used in Harry Potter is when Hermione punches a hole in the floor.

Descendo:  “I descend, climb down, fall”.
There are a few examples of when this spell is used in Harry Potter to cause something to fall.

Evanesco:  “I disappear, I die out, I pass away”

Expecto Patronum:  “I await a guardian”

Imperio:  “I command”
The words “empire” and “imperial” have come from this common Latin word.

Impervius:  “Impassable”

Incendio:  From Latin incendo, “I set fire to, I kindle”

Lumos:  From Latin lumen is a light, lamp.

Nox:  “night”

Obliviate:  “I forget”

Obscuro:  “I darken, hide, conceal, cause to be forgotten”

Oppugno:  “I fight, attack, assail”

Protego:  “I cover, protect, shield, defend”

Quietus:  “Calm, quiet, peaceful”

Reparo:  “I restore, renew, revive”

Silencio:  “Silence” or “be silent”
